Iranian Official in Armenia Discusses Karabakh Issue

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Ayatollah Jannati–the Chairman of Iran’s Constitutional Control Committee–who is currently visiting Armenia announced at a news conference Tuesday that the Armenian Constitutional Court and Iranian Constitutional Control Committee agreed to develop bilateral cooperation.

Jannati is going develop a report covering the constitutional control and human rights problems at a second international seminar scheduled for Saturday in Yerevan.

According to Jannati the Constitutional Control Committee led by him consists of six lawyers and six theologists. The former are appointed by the Parliament–while the latter–by the country’s spiritual leader. The Committee considers the correspondence of laws adopted by the Parliament to the Constitution of Iran and its religion. In case of non-correspondence laws are returned to the Parliament for amendment. The Committee also monitors elections in the country.

Jannati noted that the current Constitution of Iran adopted in 1979 and amended in 1989 ensures freedoms and human rights. In particular–women and men enjoy equal right to elect and to be elected. Jannati stressed that one of Iranian President’s deputy and two of Iran’s top-ranking officials are women. The Constitution of Iran also has a provision under which Iran pledges not to interfere in domestic affairs of other countries.

Any regional conflict should be settled inside the region and via participation of the regional countries–said Jannati commenting on Iran’s position on the Karabakh settlement.

He said that Iran condemned the United States-Israel-Turkey joint military exercises in the Mediterranean Sea this year. Jannati characterized those exercises as American-Israeli plots.

According to him–no country has the right to interfere in the tasks of the given region–be it the Persian Gulf or any other region.
