Prominent Communist Quits Party

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Prominent Armenian communist Vazgen Safarian–who was recently informed about his demotion within the party–resigned from the Communist party Tuesday.

Safarian announced that he would remain in his National Assembly seat as a communist–carrying out the party platform.

He said that according to the party’s by-laws he was to have been notified of the demotion discussion prior to the decision..

Safarian said that the resolution to demote him was adopted after the conclusion of the 42nd conference of the City Party Organization–at which he was unanimously re-elected First Secretary of the Yerevan City Committee.

Safarian noted that that fact once again proved that the party had become a "property" of Sergey Badalian–who has been charged with committing multiple violations. "Neither Badalian nor Darbinian admitted me to the party 25 years ago and they cannot expel me from it," Safarian stressed. He urged all those communists who value ideals of renewal and purification of the party to disassociate themselves with corruption and rally around sound forces of the party.
