Karabakh Support Rally Held in Yerevan Authorities Condemned

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–A Karabakh support rally was held Friday in Yerevan’s Liberty Square.

Democratic Party chairperson Aram Sargssian publicly stated that Levon Ter-Petrosyan did not represent the Armenian people’s interests and the people would not allow the forcible annexation of Karabakh to Azerbaijan.

"Armenia’s authorities are very likely to accept the proposals rejected by the Karabakh leadership as principles for the negotiations at the forthcoming meeting of OSCE foreign ministers meeting in Copenhagen," said Sargssian.

Sargssian voiced fear that the talks in Copenhagen will make it possible to apply certain sanctions against Karabakh–because–the latter will try to oppose those proposals. And in that case the OSCE Minsk Group can pass the decisions made in Copenhagen to the UN Security Council to take–what they see–as relevant measures.

Karabakh’s independence should be shown as a result of a national-liberation struggle and presented in a legal and historical realm.

He said that the opposition is consistent in its aspirations and will never agree to the defeatist policy of the authorities.

Self-Determination Union’s Leader Paruir Hairikian viewed as absolutely unacceptable the discussion of Karabakh’s status–as it had already been formed as an independent state. "Karabakh’sfreedom cannot be a subject of compromise," he said.

He warned that the international community was negotiating with persons who had stolen electors’ votes and who–consequently–could not represent the will of the Armenian people.

The DPA leader said that in the coming months the Steering Committee of the Pan-Armenian Forum in Support for Nagorno-Karabakh would launch serious work in that direction.

Addressing the rally–intellectual representatives noted that the majority of Armenia’s intelligentsia strongly opposed the policies pursued by the present leadership. They pointed out the importance of displaying common will.

They also said that one should not be afraid of war as that the threat of war was concocted by Ter-Petrosyan.

Sargssian announced that a pan-Armenian rally would be staged on Dec. 10. Demonstrations will also be held in Diaspora communities and if the ruling administration continues the present policies–it will be necessary to demand its resignation–defend achievemen’s won on the battle-fields and conduct public investigation of authorities’ activities.

The press service of the National-Democratic Union also reported that a joint statement–regarding the Karabakh conflict settlement was recently adopted by the NDU office in Shirag. The statement said that the population of Shirag–in particular Gumri–whole-heartedly opposed attempts by the Armenian authorities to disseminate defeatist propaganda.

Gumri Armenia’s–the statement read–stand behind the Armenia’s of Karabakh–as they did even during the most difficult days of the post-earthquake

The statement was signed by the regional office of the Union of Writers of Armenia–the Union of Intelligentsia–medical establishmen’s–school staffs and other organizations.

The statement is open to other signatories as well.
