Duma Member Calls for Fairness in Hovanessian Case

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–On the eve of the conclusion of the "Trial of 31," Duma Foreign Relations Committee deputy chairman Dimitri Rogozin–in a letter to Armenian Supreme Court member David Avetissian–urged the court to use its best judgment and the most legal methods of concluding and passing a verdict in the case against ARF leader Vahan Hovanessian and the 30 other individuals charged in the case.

As reported earlier–the court will reconvene this week to hear the last of the closing argumen’s by Sasha Khachatrian and Tigran Avetissian–at which point the tribunal will enter deliberations.

In his letter Rogozin urged the judge and the court to approach the case with extreme objectivity and consider all the facts of the case before making a decision. The Duma member characterized Hovanessian as a renowned and important figure in Armenian pubic life who has served Armenia and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation for numerous years.

Rogozin added that the court should not view his letter as an act of intervention in independent Armenia’s internal affairs–but as a friendly gesture.

Rogozin concluded his letter saying that he hoped the verdict in the case would demonstrate Armenia’s fairness in judging cases–which will be a new beginning for a cooperative political life in the country–as well as the development of democratic norms–leading to better relations between Russia and Armenia.

The Duma leader once again called for fairness in the case.
