Kocharian Distrustful of Stage by Stage Process

PARIS (Hayots Ashkhar/Armenpress)–French media outlets have actively featured Prime Minister Robert Kocharian’s visit to Paris. In an interview with Liberacion daily–Kocharian delved in-depth into issues facing Armenia and Karabakh.

Speaking on the stage-by-stage method of resolution of the conflict–Kocharian said that accepting the logic of the two-stage negotiations is not in the interest Nagorno-Karabakh. In the first stage it will have to leave territories gaining nothing in return–whereas negotiations of the second stage may last for years without any result at all. Kocharian said he believed that global negotiations are preferable–where all sides would make concessions– knowing that by doing so they will get something in return.

Kocharian was also asked about his at times contradictory past and present as former Karabakh president and current prime minister of Armenia. He said–"I am very well aware of the situation there–and I know what the consequences of a bad compromise will be. Armenian Prime Minister Kocharian listens to the opinion of Karabakh expert Kocharian. I do not believe in these two-stage negotiations–even though Armenia officially decided to carry out negotiations on this basis. The majority of the population does not accept this–and it is a serious danger for the future."

Kocharian went on to say that Levon Ter-Petrosyan had a right of having his own opinion–when saying that independence for Karabakh will never happen–however Kocharian said he believed that Karabakh must receive something more than wide autonomy within Azerbaijan.

According to Kocharian–the people of Karabakh would never agree to being subordinate to Baku.
