Russian Arms Transport to Armenian Halted

YEREVAN (Hayastani Hanrapetutiun)–A source in the Georgian Defense Ministry reported to Prime News that a delivery of Russian arms to Armenia was suspended in Georgia on Wednesday.

According to the report–six vehicles delivering arms from the Akhalkalaki military base to Gumri were stopped and held at the border. Georgian officials were notified of the act in advance. The source in the Georgian Defense Ministry said that Russia violated the agreement of November–14 1997–according to which it cannot withdraw the armament stationed in Georgia without informing Georgian officials. The Russian Defense Ministry refrained from commenting on this report.

The Commander of Russian troops in Armenia–General Alexey Tretiakov said this was only redistribution of ammunition and property of Russian troops stationed in the Transcaucasus. "There is nothing criminal about this. We just needed to redistribute the ammunition between our two bases to maintain balance," he declared–adding that Georgian authorities should have been notified–and the incident is probably a result of a miscommunication.
