YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–In a statement released on Friday–the newly-formed National Council considered Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s resignation as a national victory and expressed hope that henceforth the security of Armenia and Karabakh is preserved by reliable forces.
The Council stated that–unfortunately–even in his belated resignation–Ter-Petrosyan was able to distort reality by claiming–in his resignation speech–that Karabakh was not utilized as a form of pressure leading to his resignation. The Council found it to be of simple truth that discord on the resolution of the Karabakh conflict expedited his supporters’ abandonment of Ter-Petrosyan. Also noted was the already existent distance between the public and the administration.
Stating that there is no party of war–the National Council also refuted Ter-Petrosyan’s claim that the party of war had won. The statement said the loser was the bereaved party which was unsuccessfully attempting to prevent the resumption of war.
The Council further pointed out that Ter-Petrosyan was wrong in stating that he succumb to pressure exerted by certain political forces–because the people have been exerting that pressure for many years.
The statement confirmed the Council’s support of the Acting President’s supervision of free and fair presidential elections.
The National Council also expressed hoped that members of the former administration be held accountable for wrongs committed–and urged for the release of all political prisoners. In conclusion–the Council called on all healthy nationalist public and political elemen’s to cooperate in establishing a future for Armenia which is most reflective of national ideals and norms.
