Edward Hovanessian Reunited With Son Vahan After Six Year Exile

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–After a six-year exile in Germany–Armenian Revolutionary Federation member Edward Hovanessian returned to Armenia–Wednesday.

In Germany Hovanessian–who is the father of Vahan Hovanessian–managed the Armenian desk at Radio Liberty. Currently–he is director of the Center for Armenian Studies. Hovanessian had been denied an entrance visa to Armenia’since 1992. Upon arrival in Armenia–Hovanessian told journalists that he had come to Armenia with intentions to stay "unless he was exiled again."

"I am back in my country as a Dashnak [ARF member] to fight on behalf of my party for our country to become a real national state," he said. Asked about his expectations regarding the future of Armenia–Hovanessian said he hoped that the new government would finally turn Armenia into a national state.

"Our country has never been national until today; there were talks about liberty–democracy–but people don’t need all that unless there is a national state," he stated.

Hovanessian felt that the ARF will offer support to Acting President and Prime Minister Robert Kocharian in the March 16 presidential election. "Robert Kocharian is a man with a national way of thinking–and the ARF supports all such figures," Hovanessian concluded.
