Fourteen Candidates Registered for Polls

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Central Electoral Committee reported receipt of 29 civil initiative applications for nomination of presidential candidates. Eleven applications were submitted on behalf of Vazgen Manoukian–nine on behalf of Robert Kocharian–four on behalf of Baruyr Hairikian–one on behalf of Yuri Mkrtchian–one on behalf of Karen Demirchian–one on behalf of David Shahnazarian–one on behalf of Ashot Bleyan–and one on behalf of Artashes Agozian.

Nominations for the following candidates were submitted to the CEC by executive committees of political parties: Vigen Khachatrian (National Democratic Union)–Tigran Sahakian (Armenian Assembly of Armenia)–Artashes Geghamian (National Unity)–Aram Sargssian (Democratic Party of Armenia)–Sergey Badalian (Communist Party of Armenia)–Baruyr Hairikian (Self-Determination Union) and Hrant Khachatrian (Constitutional Right Union).

"Three candidates–Robert Kocharian–Vazgen Manoukian and Karen Demirchian–are the most likely candidates for the presidency in the March 16 presidential election–commented Ashot Manoucharian–political secretary of the Union of Socialist of Armenia.

Manoucharian recognized three According to him–an early presidential election is held in Armenia at the time when three major turning points are presently coinciding in Armenia. He numbered the following as determinants of the future of the Armenian nation: one administration has been replaced by another in the same governmental system; the tenth anniversary of the liberation movement of Karabakh which provides the nation with the opportunity to revisit the movement and regain what has been lost in the past ten years; and–the presidential election which will be a test in avoiding confrontation.
