Khachatrian Asks Kocharian and Manoukian to Withdraw

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–At a Tuesday press conference–Presidential candidate and chairman of the Constitutional Right Union Hrant Khachatrian suggested that presidential candidates Robert Kocharian and Vazgen Manoukian withdraw their candidacies to support him. He substantiated his statement–by saying that this way the problem of which candidate to elect will be eliminated.

Khachatrian said that if he is elected president–he will offer the post of prime minister to Kocharian–and Manoukian "will defend the democracy" in the country.

Khachatrian said it would be impossible to join forces with Karen Demirchian because he is an unpredictable politician. Khachatrian pointed out that in the past ten years–Demirchian had appeared in public as a politician only twice. In 1988 he did not support the Karabakh movement–and in 1996 he supported Levon Ter-Petrosyan in the presidential election.

Khachatrian restated that citizens of Nagorno-Karabakh should be granted the right to participate in Armenia’s elections.

Commenting on the Ararat incident–he noted that it was a menace that was inherited from Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s administration.
