CEC Awaits Evidence of Five Candidates’ Allegations

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Central Electoral Commission Chairman Khachatur Bezirjian hoped that the presidential candidates who issued a statement regarding irregularities in the election process will also provide evidence.

"Such a statement cannot be issued without evidence," Bezirjian told Noyan Tapan.

Asked if the CEC was going to respond to the allegations–Bezirjian said that the CEC’s response will depend on whether or not the statement issued will be confirmed with evidence. "No relevant data have been submitted yet–so we cannot take any steps. It still remains a mere statement," he said.

According to Bezirjian–very few formal applications were submitted to the CEC during the polls and mainly via the telephone. Upon receipt of such information–the CEC immediately sent its investigative groups to the indicated spot and informed observers who also traveled to the allegedly troubled polling locations. The complaints regarded different issues–such as imperfections in the law which violated the constitutional rights of citizens–and some conflicts. According to the CEC chairman–most of the reports of conflict have not been confirmed.
