NDU SDU Suppor Kocharian Bleyan Supports Demirchian

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Democratic Party of Armenia and the Seld-Determination Union will support Acting President–Prime Minister and presidential candidate Robert Kocharian in the March 30 run-off election–reported–respectively–DPA Chairman Aram Sargssian at a new Monday conference–and SDU Chairman Baruyr Hairkian at an SDU news conference–Monday.

Sargssian stressed that his party had proceeded not from personal but political reasons in making the decision. "We’ve made a political choice," said the DPA leader–"Our’s and Kocharian’s election platforms have a lot in common." Sargssian described the policy being conducted by the prime minister as a prospective and advanced one able to ensure the country’s steady growth through combined efforts.

Sargssian also expressed his respect for presidential candidate Karen Demirchian and emphasized that Demirchian is a significant political figure in the country’s history.

Commenting on the televised speech by a DPA Central Council member–poetess Silva Kaputikian–in which she endorsed Demirchian–Sargssian said that "Kaputikian should have spoken on her own behalf but not as a DPA member."

The Self-Determination Union held its 17th party congress Saturday during which it decided to offer its support to Kocharian in the March 30 run-off election.

At a news conference–Monday–SDU Chairman Baruyr Hairikian said the his party "could not have endorsed a political corpse," and that there is reason to believe that Kocharian intends to establish democracy. The SDU also considered the fact that among the two candidates Kocharian is the one who accepts a considerable part of the SDU’s platform regarding democracy–the rule of law and reforms in the state and legal system.

"Your trust binds me–and–after I am elected–I will see to it that you never regret your decision–" Kocharian said–addressing the congress.

Meanwhile–Monday–the chairman of the New Path Party–Ashot Bleyan–announced that he will support Karen Demirchian in the run-off election.

"Unlike Robert Kocharian–as Armenia’s president Karen Demirchian will have room to move while solving the Karabakh problem," Bleyan said.

According to him–because Demirchian did not take part in the Karabakh movement–he is free from its strings. Bleyan said that Demirchian has never called for war–and because he has not held a governmental position since 1988–"his hands will not be tied up by any obligations" in the matter of Karabakh settlement.

According to Bleyan–the future president’s ability "to freely maneuver" will be a positive factor for Armenia. "I think that the Karabakh movement has been defeated and should not continue," he said.

Bleyan said that the aforementioned is his personal opinion–and his party’s position will be made public in the near future.
