Demirchian Cries Foul in Post Election Speech

YEREVAN(Armenpress)–In a statement released Thursday–presidential candidate Karen Demirchian expressed deepest gratitude to all those who voted for him and helped him organize a campaign in difficult circumstances.

He said that the preliminary results reported by the Central Electoral Commission "to put it mildly–does not reflect reality." He claimed that the "election proceeded in an unhealthy atmosphere–with falsifications–intimidation–bribes–frauds–falsification of figures and facts." He feared that the elections would contribute to the loss of trust in truth and democracy. However–Demirchian said that he did not find it "purposeful to speak of violations and irregularities."

Demirchian said that his main objective was to ensure the interest of the people and the state–which–according to him–are above the interests of all parties–groups and individuals.

"A split in society is inadmissible. It may bring great harm our nation and the settlement of issues our people is facing today," Demirchian said.

He explained that this juncture in Armenian history was of crucial nature. "Do not allow for provocations and avoid excessive sensitivities. Let us soberly evaluate the situation. We should not make mistakes we have made once before," he suggested.

The former Communist Party leader declared that he will remain in the political arena and continue his activities in a civilized manner in accordance with the Armenian Constitution. "I have no right not to justify the votes of the hundreds of thousands who have voted for the well-being and security of our nation–for the realization of our national dreams and for our future generations. Together we represent a huge power–and it is impossible not to take that power into consideration," Demirchian said. He reported that concrete plans of action would soon be made public.

Demirchian offered assurance that "the day of unification is not far away. We will become a constructive power that will support any step–any activity toward the improvement of our Motherland and toward the unification of our nation."

In conclusion–Demirchian call on the entire Armenian nation to dismiss electoral passions–which–though justified–may prove to be harmful. "Together–we should build a truly free and developed Armenia. Let us display patience and be organized–restrained and energetic–look to the future and with confidence walk toward it."
