Kocharian Meets with US Delegation

YEREVAN (Armenpress)–President-elect Robert Kocharian received on Wednesday a US delegation headed by Senator John Warner–Chairman of the Caucus on Procedure and Administration Issues. Among the delegation members were the Admiral of the US Navy–the Commander-in-Chief of the United Forces of the Southern Europe–and Joseph T. Lopez–Commander-in-Chief of the US Navy in Europe. The guests congratulated Kocharian on his election to the post of Armenian president. Greeting the guests–Kocharian underlined US assistance to the development processes in Armenia. The President stressed that Armenia is true to the principles of democracy and will make every effort to make the process irreversible.

Senator Warner–in turn–pointed out that Armenia is well known abroad as a state with high intellectual potentials. He attached great importance to the cooperation in the sphere of scientific researches and also appraised the reforms toward market economy.

The participants of the meeting also discussed the issue of regional conflicts. Admiral Joseph Lopez stated that the US may stimulate regional stability and cooperation within the framework of the Partnership for Peace.

Admitting that the future of the Transcaucasus depends on the resolution of the conflicts–President Kocharian stressed the need for regional cooperation–joint programs that will contribute to the conflict settlement and promote mutual trust between the states of the region.

Kocharian also emphasizing the necessity of a negotiated resolution to the conflict. "It is very important for the conflicting sides to realize that they themselves should find a solution to the conflict and make a final decision. As to the mediators–they are to support the parties to conduct negotiations." According to Kocharian–the resolution of the conflict will make it possible for the states of the region to conduct more independent policy.
