Kocharian Lifts Ban on Maroukhian Entry to Armenia

Kocharian Friday issued a decree lifting a six-year-old ban imposed on former Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau chairman Hrair Maroukhian’s entry into Armenia.

On June 29–1992 then president Levon Ter-Petrosyan–in a televised speech expelled Maroukhian from Armenia and banned all future attempts from him to enter the country. Maroukhian was in Armenia awaiting the convention of the 25th ARF World Congress which was to be held in Armenia for the first time since 1919.

Maroukhian adhered to Ter-Petrosyan’s request–stating–at the time–that the ARF would not incite civil unrest in the homeland. The World Congress was thus postponed and convened later in another venue.

Following a massive brain aneurysm in 1994–Maroukhian has been debilitated and confined to his home in Athens.
