YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian signed on Friday a decree "On the return of cultural valuables that were illegally brought from Germany to Armenia after World War II." The decree was based on the United Nations Resolution "On the return of cultural valuables to the country of their origin," the agreement on cultural cooperation between the governmen’s of Armenia and Germany signed on December 21–1995–during German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel’s visit to Armenia–as well as Armenia’s law "On import and export of cultural valuables."

During his official visit to Germany–Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian returned 575 books–man’scripts and musical notes to his German counterpart.

German Ambassador to Armenia Carola Muller Holtkemper said "The decision to return the cultural valuables to Germany is first of all a manifestation of good will on the part of the Armenian people and leadership.

"The German public is grateful in receiving the 575 books–man’scripts and musical notes. I do not doubt that this decision will contribute to the further progress of Armenia-Germany relations.

"We are grateful to the Armenian President for not only his resoluteness–but also for the execution of that decree," she said.
