Ukrainian Ambassador Supports Armenia’s New Leadership

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan). The change of leadership in Armenia and the elections of a new Parliament in Ukraine will not have a negative impact on the relations between the two countries–said the Ukrainian ambassador to Armenia–Alexander Bozhko–in a meeting with journalists Friday.

Also during the recent visit of the first deputy foreign minister of Ukraine–Anton Buteiko–to Yerevan–consultations were held with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and the mutual interest in expanding cooperation was stressed–said Bozhko.

Commenting on cooperation between his country and Armenia within various CIS alliances–the Ukrainian ambassador voiced the opinion that bilateral negotiations are most effective and that CIS potential is not exhausted yet. In that regard–the diplomat stressed that the appointment of Boris Berezovsky as CIS Executive Secretary might help transform the politicized CIS into an economic structure.

Bozhko said that the economy of Ukraine–which is interested in the development of foreign economic cooperation–is becoming more and more open. He quoted Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma who–in his address to the newly elected Supreme Rada early this week–said that Ukraine was for the first time able to achieve a favorable balance in its foreign trade turnover last year.

Speaking of his country’s trade with Armenia–Bozhko stressed that it has been tending to increase lately. In the first quarter of 1998 the trade turnover between Ukraine and Armenia increased by 17 percent as compared to the corresponding period last year.

Bozhko said that there is a great potential for cooperation between Armenia and Ukraine–which embraces not only the economic sphere but also the spheres of culture and education.
