Russian Turkish Military Sign Memorandum

MOSCOW (Itar-Tass)–Chiefs of staff of the Russian and Turkish armed forces Anatoly Kvashnin and Ismail Karadayi have signed a memorandum on understanding between general staff of the Russian and Turkish armed forces on Wednesday.

"Our future cooperation in the military field and strengthening world and regional security will be developed in the future on principles of mutual understanding," Kvashnin said.

The sides felt that that the growing level of mutual confidence and understanding will help strengthen peace both in the Black Sea region and in the world in general. Russia and Turkey intend to develop and sign an agreement on cooperation in the military field which would incorporate issues of military training and cooperation in different fields. The two sides have also scheduled to conduct talks on preparations for signing an agreement on prevention of incidents at sea beyond the territorial waters of the two countries.

The two sides are expected to increase participation in joint exercises planned by NATO or the national military command in the framework of the "Partnership for Peace" program. Consultations and talks are expected to be conducted on cooperation in the area of navigation–oceanography–environmental protection in the Black Sea area.

The Turkish general declared that the Russian and Turkish people are living under the same geographical conditions and share a common fate. He expressed hope that the development of cooperation between the military departmen’s of the two countries would promote stability in the region. "The stronger the contacts between the armed forces are–the stronger the relations between the two countries will be," the Turkish general said.

Later in the day the Turkish military delegation will meet Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev and Secretary of the Russian Security Council Andrei Kokoshin.
