Pallone Praises End to ARF Ban

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian-Americans responded positively to the legalization of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation in Armenia–and this fact had a considerable impact on the unification of the Diaspora–Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) said at a meeting with President Robert Kocharian Monday.

Praising Pallone’s pro-Armenian work–Kocharian said–"That support helps us overcome the difficulties of the transitional period–and contributes to the establishment of peace and stability in the region."

Kocharian and congressmen Pallone and Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) discussed Armenia-US relations–as well as issues regarding regional cooperation.

Kocharian again assured that Armenia has chosen market economy as both a conviction and a firm program for the state. Kocharian explained that the reforms cover various spheres–and the country has entered a new phase moving from humanitarian aid to development programs.

The president said efforts were underway to create favorable investment conditions.

"Our purpose in coming here is to see how we could improve relations between the United States and Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh–and how the US can play a greater role in terms of economic development to Armenia," Pallone said Tuesday

"I feel the United States can play a greater role in trying to negotiate the settlement than it has in the past," Pallone said. He said Washington must be convinced that existing peace proposals are no longer valid and insist that the parties put forward new ideas.

The sides also emphasized the necessity of developing and implementing joint regional programs to help form mutual confidence between the countries–and contribute to the establishment of stability in the region.

Also on Monday–the congressmen met with Prime Minister Armen Darbinian.

The two congressmen assured that Armenia has numerous friends in the US who are closely following the process of democratic and economic reforms in Armenia.
