Kocharian Hails Recognition of Genocide

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–President Robert Kocharian on Tuesday repeated Armenia’s satisfaction with the recognition by the French parliament last week of the 1915 Genocide of more than one million Armenia’s in the Ottoman Empire.

"I welcome this decision by France’s National Assembly and express my gratitude to those who have voiced their support for historical justice," Kocharian said in a statement. "The genocide of Armenia’s is a tragedy not only of our people but of all humanity–and it is incumbent on us all to secure its condemnation."

The French parliament on May 29 unanimously voted to approve the measure despite strong objections from Turkey–which consistently denies that the events of 1915 constituted a genocide. The move was hailed the next day by the Armenian Foreign Ministry–which earlier pledged to pursue worldwide recognition of the tragedy.

"The Armenian people do not want revenge–but a fair assessment of the past which will avert further crimes against humanity," Kocharian said. "I am confident that the recognition of the genocide will foster peace and stability in the region," he concluded.
