Holy Savior Cathedral to Reopen

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The opening of one of the most grand churches in Karabakh–the Holy Savior Cathedral (Ghazanchetsots) in the city of Shushi will be held on July 19. Divine liturgy will be served to mark the reopening of the church at the same day. Reconstruction is expected to be complete by that date.

In an interview with Noyan Tapan–Primate of the Nagorno-Karabakh Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church–Bishop Barkev Martirossian stated that the rite of sanctification of the church will begin on July 12.

The church was closed in 1935 and has since been used as a storage. During the ten years of Nagorno-Karabakh’s struggle for liberation–Holy Savior Cathedral was used as a military warehouse.

According to Bishop Martirossian–all Nagorno-Karabakh temples were shut down in the 1930s. Currently–there are operating churches in Gandzasar–Shushi–Vanadzor and Stepanakert.

"There are hundreds of churches in Artsakh–and we are going to restore all of them," said the Primate.
