Speaker Cypriot Ambassador Urge Active Relations

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Khosrov Harutiunian met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Armenia–Platon Kiriakides–Thursday. During the meeting Harutiunian expressed optimism that the diplomatic work of the Cypriot ambassador would promote stronger relations between the two nations.

The speaker also said that Armenia is closely following the events taking place in Cyprus today and there is a great interest in the life of the Armenian community of Cyprus. According to Harutiunian–the ties between the parliamen’s of the two countries need further activity through mutual visits of delegations–exchanges of experience–as well as interparliamentary activities.

The speaker also referred to the importance of combined efforts in settling territorial disputes. Addressing the Karabakh conflict–Harutiunian presented the approach of the Armenian authorities–stressing the need for political talks within the framework of the OSCE.

Ambassador Kiriakides conveyed the greetings and best wishes of the president and the parliament speaker of Cyprus. He pointed out that his country is ready to establish closer intergovernmental and interparliamentary ties with Armenia.

"There is an historical connection between our two nations and mutual assistance is needed to overcome today’s difficulties," said Kiriakides. He also adverted to the Cypriot problem–emphasizing that the settlement of that problem will promote the development of the country and the welfare of its people.

Kiriakides briefed he Armenian speaker on the structure and activities of his country’s parliament.
