President Encourages Establishment of Human Rights Committee

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The committee for human rights that was set up in Armenia for the first time is a temporary–transitional body–President Kocharian pointed out at a meeting of the Presidential Human Rights Committee last week.

The president said that a similar structure should be stipulated within the Constitution–making it possible to specify its function. As for the current Committee–the president said that it should be specified which of the issues were subject to discussion in the Committee–and which of them should be considered by courts.

Kocharian said that the government should also discuss the bill on human rights which was elaborated by the Committee.

The president pointed out that the Committee’s decision on banning the advertisement of alcoholic drinks and tobacco in public places can impede local producers–as foreign products are advertised on foreign TV and radio channels which are broadcast in Armenia.
