Acting Prosecutor General Appointed

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–The duties of the assassinated Prosecutor-General Henrik Khachatryan have been "temporarily" assigned to his deputy Jirair Kharatian–the presidential press service said Wednesday.

Kharatian will at the same time continue to head the prosecutor’s office’s department overseeing police investigations.

President Robert Kocharian said earlier in the day he needs some time to decide who will be the next prosecutor-general. He said the ongoing investigation into Khachatryan’s murder is proceeding in a "transparent" way.

Khachatrian was shot dead in his office on August 6 by another senior prosecutor–according to law-enforcement agencies.

Khachatryan had been shot in his office in Yerevan at about 5 p.m. by another prosecutors office official–Aram Karapetyan.

After shooting Khachatryan twice in the head–Karapetyan–who currently held the post of head criminal prosecutor–then fatally shot himself.

There was no explanation of any motive for the murder and government ministries declined to give more details.

Kocharian expressed his concerns in regards to the event–saying that a concise chronology of events and the conditions of the location of the incident needed to be established–before making resolute statemen’s. In particular Kocharian questioned whether there were only two individuals–the alleged gunman and the victim–in Khachatryan ‘s office.
