Violence Against Soldiers Witnessed in Yerevan Garrison

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– The Executive Director of the Fund Against Violation of Law–Larisa Alaverdian was a witness to an incident that took place in the guard-room of the Yerevan garrison. Alaverdian said that the workers of the nearby "Garun" garmen’s factory–informed her that they saw three men in uniforms beating two soldiers. Alaverdian arrived when the soldiers were being forced to kneel on the ground and stretch out their hands; one of the soldiers’ clothes were torn. Alaverdian began making signs to the servicemen to stop the violence–but one of them only shrugged his shoulders. The violence was stopped only after Alaverdian had rung up the presidential staff and the Ministry of Defense.

In connection with the incident–the Fund and 56 workers of the "Garun" clothes factory–who were witnesses to what happened–addressed a letter to the Minister of Defense. Furthermore–the Fund issued a statement describing the cruel treatment of the soldiers and assured that it will make every effort to reveal and punish those guilty of the incident
