Most Teenagers Find Sexl Education Necessary

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– The poll conducted by the Armenian Health Association among 1,425 boys and girls aged 10-19 in Yerevan and the Ararat and Kotayk regions showed that many of them have very little knowledge of diseases transmitted through sexual intercourse. Only 43 percent of girls and 39 percent of boys have an idea of AIDS. And 22 percent of teenagers have no idea of the methods of family planning.

The teenagers don’t receive any information about sensuality–contraceptives or sexually transmitted diseases from their parents and teachers. The main sources of information for them are friends–TV–video films–and press.

The overwhelming majority of teenagers – 83 percent–point to the need for sexual education in schools as well as establishment of medical services that deal with the issues related to the sexual health of teenagers.
