US Agency Sponsors Energy Development Program in Armenia

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– The United States Geological Survey (USGS) is conducting a program of coal exploration and resource assessment in Armenia. The $3 million program is being sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development. The program is part of the USAID aid directed at the development of Armenian energy resources.

Program manager Brenda Pierce told Noyan Tapan that currently USGS is carrying out exploration and prospecting activities in the coal deposit of Antaramut near Lori. She also reported that coal was found in places where it hadn’t been found up to now. Pierce said that the assessment of coal resources is made simultaneously with drilling work–however–she would not elaborate as to the results of the assessmen’s–saying that prospecting and field works at this deposit are still in progress. Prospecting may be resumed at the deposits of Shamut–Jerman’s (near Alaverdi)–Jajur–Maisian (near Shirak) and others. The program is expected to complete in the fall of 1999.

"Our goal is to find and assess the amount and location of coal and report information to the relevant environmental and economic structures," said Pierce.
