Hovanessian Meets With Israeli Diplomat Gidor

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Presidential advisor Vahan Hovanessian received the first secretary of Israel’s Embassy in Armenia–Consul Ran Gidor (residence in Tbilisi) on Wednesday.

Hovanessian congratulated the guest upon the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Israel. Gidor reportedly attached great importance to his country’s relationship with Armenia based on realistic approaches.

The Israeli diplomat suggested that the Armenian leadership should discuss the opening of a Yerevan-Tel Aviv direct flight and the establishment of Israel’s consular department in Armenia.

The Israeli diplomat inquired whether the Armenian communities of Lebanon and Syria influence Armenian-Israeli relations. In connection with this–Vahan Hovanessian pointed out that Armenia defends the interests of Armenia’s living all over the world–but it considers the fact that Armenia’s living in the Middle East are citizens of other countries–while Armenian foreign policy is decided in Yerevan.

The sides also stressed the commonalties between the peoples of Israel and Armenia–especially highlighting the Genocide of Armenia’s.

On the same day–Hovanessian received a delegation of the Union of Veterans of the Afghan War led by the organization’s chairman A. Mkhitarian. This union is an organization which made a major contribution to Karabakh’s heroic struggle for independence from the very beginning of the liberation movement.

During the meeting–the members of the Union presented their problems and difficulties. At the same time–it was highlighted that ways of ending the current crisis are being sought and that problems of improving the social situation of the Union’s members will be discussed during a conference scheduled for this fall.
