UNDP Press Conference Held in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– It was announced two weeks ago–during the presentation of the "1997 Human Development Report" of the UNDP’s Yerevan office–that the discussion of the report would take place on Thursday.. However–since the journalists present were not ready for discussion–it in fact turned into a press-conference led by the group’s coordinator Gevorg Poghossian and the authors Souren Zolian and Edward Melkonian.

Poghoossian presented the report and the socio-political situation in Armenia in the period that the preliminary text of the report was drawn up (July – October 1997). The subject of the report is "Social Cooperation." According to Poghossian–the group encountered difficulties in collecting fresh data and in some cases failed to obtain them – that is–one can’t even come across data for 1994 in the text.

Souren Zolian said that only in two cases did he obtain similar data from the Prosecutor’s Office. Data was even missing in reports of different government bodies (agencies). Also–according to Souren Zolian–"there was a system crisis in Armenia last year which is being gradually overcome today."

It was said that the annual global UN human development reports–although they don’t come across the above-mentioned problems–can’t avoid the two-year "corridor." That is–the UN Global Human Development Report for 1997 will present data for 1995.
