Patriarchal Elections Scheduled for October

ISTANBUL (Marmara)–The Istanbul Patriarchate announced that the election petition was finally presented to Patriarchal Election Committee President Pylo Atan. Atan was invited to the Minority Affairs Desk of the Interior Ministry where committee director Orhan Akare accepted the petition. Atan later went to the Patriarchate and gave the petition to the Patriarchate’s Locum Tenens Archbishop Mesrob Mutafyan.

A meeting was called Wednesday morning in order to begin the preliminary steps towards the elections. Another meeting will take place on Friday.

Mutafyan stated that the elections will follow the rules established by a 1961 memorandum–which means no new rules or methods will be instituted in the elections.

The elections for general church assembly will be held on October 9–for Executive Council on October 11 and for the Patriarch on October 14.

This puts an end to the uncertainty surrounding the elections and the community can begin preparations for this important event.
