Galstian Fund Sponsors Repairs for High School

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– "I was happy to work with a man like Hambartsum Galstian. I loved him very much for his honesty," Yerevan’s Mayor Souren Abrahamian said during an event arranged on September 1–the first day of classes at the Hambartsum Galstian School.

Seven months ago–Yerevan’s School No. 83 was named after a "Karabakh" Committee member–former mayor of Yerevan (1990-1992) Hambartsum Galstian who was murdered in December 1994. Murder investigations still continue.

The Hambartsum Galstian Fund–which was set up six months ago on private donations–is financing the repairs of the school building. It has already spent around 50 million drams for repairs–the purchase of furniture and school stock for 700 pupils. By September 1–the school had prepared to admit pupils although repairs were still in progress. A program to raise teacher salaries is also planned to be financed soon.

The fund also aims to assist in cultural and education projects. The fund gran’s monthly Hambartsum Galstian scholarship of $100 to the best student of the Chair of Ethnography of the Department of History at Yerevan State University (Galstian graduated from this chair).
