Armenia’s Struggle in Later Rounds of Chess Jr. Championship

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Alexei Ilyushin and Alexander Motylev of Russia made an enthusiastic performance in the eighth and ninth rounds of the ongoing European Chess Jr. Championship in Yerevan. These victories placed the two at the top with seven points each. In the last round–Ilyushin beat Andranik Matikozian–and Motylev beat Varuzhan Akobian. Matikozian shares 3-5 places with Davit Arutiunian and Levon Aronian with six points. Umut Atakisi of Turkey–Gabriel Sargissian of Armenia–Mikheil Mchedlishvili of Georgia and Van Den Doel of the Netherlands are continuing their struggle to place among the top three.

In the last round of the female competition–Sopio Tkeshelashvili and Rusudan Geletiani–both of Georgia–beat Elina Danielian and Narine Gasparian–both of Armenia–respectively and with seven points continue to be in the lead. Lilit Mkrtchian–after beating Ana Matnadze–still hopes to place among the top three.
