Dangers of Repealing Section 907 Highlighted

WASHINGTON–Armenian-Americans kicked off a campaign to counter the threat to peace in the Caucasus after a Congressional committee voted to maintain the US ban on aid to Azerbaijan–Section 907.

The measure–known as the Livingston amendment–aims to repeal the ban on US assistance to the government of Azerbaijan.

Section 907–which restricts US aid directly to the Azeri government until it lifts its blockades of Armenia and Karabakh–has come under intense attack from the oil industry and other financial interests linked to the government of former KGB General Haydar Aliyev.

The Livingston Amendment was included by the Appropriations Committee as part of the foreign aid bill by a vote of 30 to 19.

The measure–authored by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Bob Livingston (R-La.)–would open the door to direct US assistance to Azerbaijan.

The full House is expected to consider the foreign bill within the next week to two weeks.
