Leaders Claim European Chess in Confrontation Game

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Alexander Motylev of Russia beat Andranik Matikozian of Armenia in the 11th round of the European Chess Jr. Championship. Motylev now has 8.5 points and good chances to win the European title. Mher Hovhanisian defended his positions in his match against another leader Alexei Iljushin–and Levon Aronian beat Milen Vasilev and now shares second place with Iljushin. Gabriel Sargissian drew with Mikheil Mchedlishvili–and Varuzhan Akobian lost to Alexander Rabinovich.

In the female competition–Sopio Tkeshelashvili lost to Katarzyna Jurkiewicz of Poland which allowed Jovanka Houska of Britain to catch up with her after beating Lile Tsalugelashvili. Both have 8 points. They are followed by Rusudan Goletiani (7.5) who lost to her teammate Ana Matnadze. Elina Danielian and Lilit Mkrtchian have 6.5 points and will play against each other in the next round.
