Second Int’l Seismic Conference Being Held in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The second international seismic conference on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Spitak earthquake opened in Yerevan Tuesday. At the same time it is a territorial conference of the UN "International Decade of Natural Disasters Reduction (1990-2000)"organization for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and CIS member-states. Within the framework of the second conference–the fifth conference is being held on cooperation between the countries of Central–Eastern–and South-East Europe.

300 specialist from 43 countries are attending the conference–which was arranged by the Armenian National Seismic Protection Service with the sponsorship of the UN IDNDR. Following the opening speech of the chairman of the conference–head of the NSPS–professor Sergey Balasanian and Armenian Prime Minister Armen Darbinian hailed the conference. Catholicos of All Armenia’s Karekin I–President of the National Academy of Sciences Fadei Sargssian–Shirak’s Governor Ararat Gomtsian and others also sent their messages of greeting to the conference.

The conference includes the following three items: the experience different countries have gained in reducing the danger of natural disasters since 1988; seismic risk–earthquake resistant construction–seismic risk reduction and seismic protection; and models of effective reduction of seismic danger in future.
