Kocharian Addresses United Nations General Assembly

UNITED NATIONS–Armenian President Robert Kocharian addressed the 53rd United Nations General Assembly Friday morning at 10 a.m. EDT–at which time he highlighted the importance of recognizing the Armenian Genocide as a means to prevent further such actions.

Kocharian also called on the international community to exert efforts to overcome obstacles facing the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process. He also addressed the deadlock stemming from Azerbaijan’s refusal to directly negotiate with Nagorno-Karabakh.

Kocharian–accompanied by First Lady Bella Kocharian–Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian–presidential assistant Armen Gevorkian and spokesperson Gasia Abkarian arrived in New York Thursday. That evening–the president held a public forum at the Mariott Marquis hotel in Manhattan for the Armenian-American community.

During his visit to the UN–Kocharian met with Cypriot president Glafcos Clerides and Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik-al-Hariri.
