Bulgaria to Support Armenia in Becoming Council of Europe Member

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–An Armenian parliamentary delegation headed by Parliament Speaker Khosrov Haroutiunian left for Sofia–Bulgaria Wednesday. The same day the members of the delegation met with Speaker of the National Assembly of Bulgaria Jordan Sokolov.

Sokolov pointed out that Bulgaria has been in deep economic crisis for ten years–but in 1997–after early elections–the country embarked on the path of democracy.

The sides discussed the issues of interparliamentary cooperation in various European and regional structures–in particular–within the framework of the TRACECA program. both sides voiced confidence that cooperation within the framework of these structures will promote stable development of the South Caucasus.

Haroutiunian presented Armenia’s position on the Karabakh settlement. He said that direct negotiations between Karabakh and Azerbaijan are a necessary condition of the Karabakh settlement.

The speaker of the National Assembly of Bulgaria gave assurances that Bulgaria will support Armenia in becoming a member of the Council of Europe.
