Oskanian Meets with Europe Commissioner

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia’s Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian met with European Union Commissioner Hans Van der Broek in New York last Thursday to discuss the current state of relations between Armenia and the European Union.

Oskanian was part of delegation–led by President Robert Kocharian–to the United Nations 53rd General Assembly.

The two leaders reportedly exchanged views on the realization of provisions stipulated by the NATO Agreement on Partnership and Cooperation. The two also addressed the results of the recent TRACECA conference held in Baku which discussed the establishment of a transport corridor connecting Europe–the Caucasus and Central Asia.

Minister Oskanian and Commissioner Van der Broek also discussed the Karabakh settlement. Oskanian addressed the recent visit by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Minsk Group co-chairmen. He also expressed hope that the negotiations would resumed and said that Armenia relied on the support of the European Union in this matter.

The sides also discussed regional problems–such as the possible impact of the economic crisis in Russia on Caucasus.
