Russo Armenian University Founded in Yerevan

YEREVAN (Itar-Tass)–A Russo-Armenian University was founded in Yerevan in keeping with an agreement between the Russian Minister of Higher and Professional Education and the Armenian Minister for Education and Science. It is the first state higher educational establishment in the country–which will be managed jointly by Russia and Armenia.

"As a matter of fact–the university has not been opened yet," its director–Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia told Itar-Tass.

He said that in accordance with the inter-governmental agreement–the Armenian side is to provide it with the necessary building–student hostels–land plots or ready-made premises for lecture-rooms and physical culture lessons.

It will also help create proper living conditions for the invited instructors. According to the director–the Armenian government has already allocated half a million dollars to repair some of the buildings and 1.5 million dollars will be earmarked for this purpose within the next two years.

The tuition process will be financed on a parity basis from the budgets of Russia and Armenia. The university will also be permitted to draw on the voluntary contributions of businessmen–public organizations–and individuals.

The new educational establishment will train specialists in humanitarian and natural sciences–economists–and lawyers–the rector noted.

The study programs will be based on the Russian state-approved general educational standards–supplemented by organizations.
