Gen. Dro’s Remains to be Taken to Armenia

GLENDALE–During a visit to the Los Angeles area last week–the family of General Dro (Drastamat Kanayan) announced their intention of moving the Armenian hero’s remains from Massachusetts to Armenia for reinterment in Yerevan.

Gen. Dro’s son Mardig and his sister Olga Proudian told Horizon Armenian television and the Asbarez editorial board that the government of Armenia had taken complete responsibility to move the general’s remains to Armenia and also to establish a leadership institute in Gen. Dro’s name in Armenia as a living memorial.

In a letter to the Kanayans–Armenia’s defense minister stipulated that the government of Armenia had delegated the defense ministry to head the "task of returning Drastamat Kanayan’s remains to the Republic of Armenia."

The letter also added that in establishing the leadership institute–the government would provide the building and auxiliary structures that require restoration and rebuilding.

The leadership center projection is estimated to cost between $500,000 and $600,000.

The family expressed concern that a monument would not be consistent with Gen. Dro’s lifestyle since "he [Dro] considered himself a simple servant of the Armenian people and eschewed the vestiges of power."

With this in mind–the family agreed to the establishment of the institute which "would be in concert with Gen. Dro’s philosophy that every Armenian cannot have a great goal but to serve his country and work to ensure the security and preservation of the Armenian nation."

The Kanayan family has agreed to spearhead this fundraising project from the US to minimize the expenses to the Armenian government. The Armenia Fund USA has agreed to accept the Leadership Institute as one of its projects and all donations will be forwarded to the fund.

The Kanayan family will make a donation of $25,000 for the establishment of the Leadership Institute and for the return of Gen. Dro’s remains to Armenia.

The Kanayan family extended an invitation to all Armenia’s to assist in the interment of Gen. Dro. To date committees have been formed in California–New York/New Jersey and Washington.

Committee members include Mardig Kanayan–Dro Kanayan–Phillip Kanayan Dr. Hratch Abrahamian and Vahig Gurjian.
