International Conference to Highlight Armenia Investment

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–An international conference was scheduled to get underway in Amsterdam on Thursday on opportunities for investing in Armenia.

The conference–organized by the governmen’s of the Netherlands and Armenia and sponsored by the European Union–is aimed at "presenting European investors with opportunities offered by the Armenian economy," the government’s press office said.

Representatives of foreign companies operating in Armenia and more than two dozen Armenian businesses are expected to unveil "investment projects" encompassing agriculture–electronics–chemical and textile industries–tourism and banking sector–the press office said.

According to the government’s statistical data–direct foreign investmen’s in the Armenian economy reached $123 million in the first nine months of the year–more than twice the amount during the same period in 1997.

Official Yerevan will be represented at the conference by Prime Minister Armen Darbinian–who left for Amsterdam on Wednesday.

Darbinian is due to meet with his Dutch counterpart Wim Kok and deliver a speech at the international justice tribunal in The Hague.
