Armenia’s Policies Hailed by International Community

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)– An Armenian delegation led by Prime Minister Armen Darbinian arrived in Amsterdam–the Netherlands–on Wednesday to attend the international business forum "Armenia: Business in an Open Economy". The same da–the Armenian prime minister was reported to have held a meeting with the Mayor of Amsterdam–S. Patein. "The people of the Netherlands have a tender understanding for the resolve shown by the Armenian people in the centuries-old struggle for historical justice–its heroic ability to get back on its feet and to continue developing despite disasters," said the mayor–when greeting the Armenian prime minister.

The same day in the Hague–Armen Darbinian met with the Minister of Territorial Management and Ecology of the Netherlands–Jan Frong. Among the issues discussed was the organization of expert and technical assistance which will work to include Lake Sevan into international environmental programs.

Prime Minister Darbinian spoke at the International Court of Justice. "On the threshold of the new century new problems emerge before our countries–the most important of which is to step up security and sustainable development in the region," said the prime minister in addressing problems of regional development. He went on to say that "today none of the countries can conduct an isolated policy as it is impossible to cope with the unceasingly rising ecological problems."

According to the chairman of the International Court of Justice in the Hague–Schwebel–the international community highly appreciates the steps taken by the Armenian authorities towards strengthening democracy and increasing the welfare of citizens. Armenia’s possible membership in this prestigious international organization was also among the main issues discussed.

Darbinian also met with the chairman of the National Investment Bank of the Netherlands–Marius Jonkart–to discuss concrete investment programs related to Armenia.

In Amsterdam–Darbinian met with European Commission Envoy–a delegation led by Viterbrut– to discuss regional cooperation and the formation of an atmosphere of mutual trust in the region.

The same day Prime Minister Darbinian held a meeting with businessmen and industrialists who are making investmen’s in the Armenian economy.
