Egypt Prelate Meets Sudanese Officials

The Armenian Prelacy of Egypt announced that–at the invitation of the Armenian Community Assembly in Sudan–Prelate Bishop Zaven Chinchinian–has left for an official visit of Sudan on December 8. He was met in–Sudan’s capital–Khartoum by several church leaders–Community Assembly members and members of the Armenian community of Sudan.

Chinchinian visited the "Hrant" Armenian Center which had been taken over and sold. Critical steps had to be taken to nullify the sale. Chinchinian met with the Minister of Justice Dr. Ali Osman Yeasin and discussed the brotherhood which exists between the people of Egypt and Sudan.

He also stressed the fact that Armenia’s and Arabs had lived together since the 7th century. Yesain promised to look into the issue and attempt to return the "Hrant" center to the Armenian community.

On December 12–the Prelate Bishop and his delegation met with the Minister of Culture and Journalism–Ghazi Salaheddin Atabani.

The Prelate Bishop presented the issue at hand and asked the Minister to help return the center to which many Sudanese youth also belong.

On the same day Chinchinian also met with the President of Sudan–Omar Hasan El-Bashir.

The two sides discussed the brotherhood and peace which exists between the Egyptian and Sudanese sides–the Prelate Bishop wished El-Bashir success and prosperity for the people of Sudan.

Chinchinian also asked the President to ensure the return of the "Hrant" center explaining its importance in developing younger generations and bringing together the local community.

On Sunday mass was held and the Prelate Bishop addressed the faithful. He later met with religious leaders of several denominations.

On December 19–a general Community Assembly took place where the issue of church and community elections was discussed.

The Prelate mentioned that because of the stable situation of the church–new elections were not necessary. The Prelate also promised to meet with the Catholicos of All Armenia’s to discuss sending a bishop to Khartoum.

At the request of the Community Assembly–the Prelate Bishop promised to return to Khartoum on a similar visit next year.

On the 20th the Prelate visited the Khartoum cemetery where he blessed the memory of the community benefactors–community leaders and others who have passed.

The Prelate bishop also offered his well wishes to the government of Sudan on the occasion of Ramadan.

Prelate Bishop Chinchinian returned to Egypt on the night of December 20.
