BAKU (Itar-Tass)– The Azeri parliament endorsed the Constitution of the Nakhichevan autonomous republic on Tuesday. The Constitution will come into effect after a corresponding decree is issued by Azeri president Haydar Aliyev.
Under the new Constitution–Nackhichevan is an autonomous state in southwest Azerbaijan. The Chairman of the Nakhichevan Mejlis (High Assembly) is considered the head of this region.
Although a number of Azeri lawmakers came out against endorsing the Constitution of the autonomous region on the grounds that the status of a state within a state is too high and might create unwanted precedents in the future–the majority of lawmakers agreed that the status does not run contrary to the constitution of Azerbaijan.
