Kocharian Delivers New Year’s Message

YEREVAN–On the occasion of the New Year’s Holiday–President–Robert Kocharian delivered his message to the Armenian Nation. Below is the translated text of the message.

The coming of a new year is always an opportunity to evaluate the year which has passed and to consider what is to be done in the coming year.

The year has been unique yet difficult–we have overcome two great obstacles. The year began in political strife which led to presidential elections. Presidential elections are always a critical event in a nation’s history. The Armenian people took the circumstances in stride and repolished the image of the government.

Second–the nation was able to avoid financial disaster after a wave of economic misfortune swept through our neighboring countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States. Not only was Armenia able to survive this economic disaster but was also able to maintain a steady economy and come out of the situation unscathed and with an improved economy.

Despite these successes the new year brings the same struggles and obstacles. Namely–the drive to turn Armenia into the most self-sufficient–prosperous–and strongest nation in the region. This is going to need a lot of work and dedication. Both internal and external forces must be in cooperation and willing to give their all to achieve this lofty goal. In order for our goals to become reality it is no surprise that the Diaspora and the homeland must work hand in hand. The resolution of the Karabakh conflict–again–needs the cooperative work of all forces.

I understand that for a lot of people the positive changes in society are not as noticeable because our expectations are always very high. It is normal for a people to want the best possible social and political situations. Especially–as the old year is drawing to a close–people have new goals–new aspirations–and new ideals. However–this is not unrealistic. With our plans for the new year–new houses and apartment buildings are going to be built–new factories are going to be established–and for the villages improvemen’s in the sector of trade will be sought. Our brave fighting force will continue its loyal service in the name of justice and peace.

Let us be optimistic on this holiday. Hardship is always a possibility but is never eternal. The government of any nation faces many difficult decisions. It is never easy to be the leaders of an entire nation. It is often the case that certain decisions have to be taken and policies adopted which might not seem like the best on the individual level–but in the long-run can provide better economic stability. Often a doctor is forced to induce some pain upon his patient in order to be able to cure him. However–the hardest part is now behind us. With the combined efforts of all our people we can definitely raise the standard of living and improve our everyday situations. Especially because we have set serious goals for the new year.

Dear Armenia’s of Armenia–Karabakh and the Diaspora–I wish you all peace–happiness–health and brotherhood. Our nation has always overcome hardship with the ideology that with the old year problems leave us and the new year brings prosperity and happiness. Happy New Year and Best wishes to you all.
