British Officials in Armenia for Talks on Economy Relations

YEREVAN (Yerevan News Agency)–Head of the British Foreign Ministry’s Eastern Division Ann Pringle arrived in Armenia Monday for a series of talks with high-level Armenian officials. Meeting with foreign minister Vartan Oskanian and prime minister Armen Darbinian–political and economic issues concerning Armenia were placed on the agenda.

In meeting with Oskanian–the sides discussed Armenian-British relations and prospects of expanding Yerevan-London relations regarding strengthening of economic relations between the two countries.

Mutual visits by high-level diplomats was also discussed.

The sides also addressed Armenia’s policy toward Europe–specifically stressing the current situation of dialogue between Armenia and the European Union and Armenia’s membership in the Council of Europe.

The British side commended Armenia’s relations and policy with the European Union.

Armenia’s relations with its Caucasus neighbors were also discussed–as was the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

In a separate meeting–prime minister Darbinian presented Armenia’s economic agenda to the British officials–stressing Armenia’s plans for economic reforms–as well as Armenia’s economic foreign policy.

Darbinian pledged Armenia’s willingness to take an active role in regional economic issues.

Pringle stated that while other CIS member-states were severely affected by the recent Russian economic crisis–Armenia was able to confront the situation due to its economic policy.

The two sides also discussed an upcoming summit–scheduled to take place in London in October–devoted to Armenia’s economic development and administration issues. economic cooperation between Armenia and Great Britain was also discussed.

Great Britain’s ambassador to Armenia John Mitchener accompanied Pringle to both meetings.
