Government to Support Symphony Orchestra

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–President Robert Kocharian and the Ministry of Culture–Youth Affairs and Sports seem to be quite instrumental in getting the problems of the Symphony Orchestra of the Armenian National Radio resolved–Orchestra Director Ohan Durian stated at a press conference Tuesday. He announced that from now on his orchestra will be called "Durian’s Symphony Orchestra" of the Ministry of Culture and National Radio.

Durian is optimistic that government support will help preserve the orchestra staff–coordinate the work–and stage concert programs in Armenia. Such world-renowned Armenian signers as Arax Davtian–Barsegh Toumanian–Gor Arsenian–Armen Arapian and others are likely to be invited to Armenia to perform in similar concert programs–the maestro announced.

Commenting on his personal relationship with Philharmonic Orchestra Director Loris Tjeknavorian–Durian said the only thing he could do was to give Tjeknavorian a piece of fraternal advice to think broader than how to establish a "philharmonic monopoly" in Armenia.

"I disagree with those who say that Armenia doesn’t need Tjeknavorian. Yet–the latter has to realize that there are nonetheless talented artists around him whom Armenia needs too," Durian concluded.
