IAEA Re Evaluates Seismic Safety At Power Plant

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The International Atomic Energy Agency is implementing a $100,000 program of seismic safety re-evaluation of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).

One of the program objectives is to review the terms of reference for the seismic upgrading of the NPP. Seismic safety was considered in the initial design and construction of the plant system–components and buildings according to the former USSR rules and standards. Studies of seismic safety in accordance with new data–methods and criteria recognized in international practice are being conducted as part of the program. The program provides for the verification of the geological stability of the site as well as related consultations and seminars. Instrumentation was provided for the local seismological network–which is producing important data from satellite images for tectonic analysis.
