Cilicia See Attends Oriental Orthodox Conference

ANTELIAS–Lebanon–Some 13 representatives of the Oriental Orthodox Churches family and World Alliance of Reformed Churches gathered in the St. Ephrem Syrian Orthodox Seminary–in Damascus-Syria–from Jan. 9 to 15–in response to an invitation by His Holiness Mar Ignatius Zakka I of the Syrian Orthodox Church–to attend the fifth session of its bilateral dialogue and to discuss the topic of "Priesthood in the Church".

The Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia was represented by Bishop Dirayr Panossian and V. Rev. Nareg Alemezian.

Zakka I welcomed the participants–who attended seminars on Priesthood–Past and Present. Following the presentations–a report was prepared by the participants reflecting the conclusions from the presentation.

It was decided to hold the sixth session of this Conference in Scotland from January 11 to 15–2000.

The Catholicosate of the Holy See of Cilicia was also represented at a recent conference on Muslim-Christian Dialogue–which convened in Aman–Jordan.

The conference was organized by Jordan’s Crown Prince and president of the Islamic Studies Research Center Prince Hasan bin Talali and the Universal Patriarchate of the Orthodox Churches–headquartered in Geneva. More than 57 Muslim and Christian religious and lay participants–representing 18 countries took part in the meeting.

The Cilician See was represented by Dr. John Salmanian.

Workshops and seminars addressing Muslim-Christian dialogue and cooperation were held–highlighting the imperative of co-existence and religious freedoms.

Last month His Holiness Aram I–Cathoilicos of the Holy See of Cilicia was re-elected to the presidency of the World Council of Churches–largely because of his leadership in promoting ecumenical cooperation and understanding.
