Vice Speaker Attends OSCE Vienna Meetings

YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Vice-Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Yuri Bashkhian participated in the working meetings of the Standing Committee of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly held in Vienna January 14-15.

The OSCE Acting Chairman–Norwegian Foreign Minister K.Volebek was scheduled to make a report on the OSCE missions–in particular–those supervising the course of elections in different countries and conflict settlement. The speakers paid special attention to the Kosovo conflict and stressed the need for settling the conflict as soon as possible and the OSCE’s cooperation with different organizations–in particular–with the UN and NATO. A special resolution was adopted on the issue.

Expressing concern over the Karabakh conflict–Volebek found it advisable to hold a meeting of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairmen in Oslo in the near future.

The participants also discussed the agenda of the conference on universal security and human rights in the 21st century to be held in St. Petersburg.

One of the resolutions adopted at the meetings concerned the necessity for lifting the oil embargo and economic sanctions from Iraq as well as the inadmissibility of resuming hostilities against that country.

Economic problems–in particular–those of subregional integration were also discussed.

Those present also addressed the results of the seminar on conflict settlement held in Tbilisi last year and attended by the Armenian delegation. Speaking at the meetings–Yuri Bashkhian pointed out that during similar arrangemen’s conflicting parties have an opportunity to sit down to the negotiating table and express their views. At the same time–he expressed regret over the Azeri delegation’s absence from the meetings.

Bashkhian also stressed the importance of OSCE observers’ participation in the coming parliamentary elections in Armenia.
